Free Seminar: Essential Tips to Protect Seniors from Online Scams

Community members are invited to attend the Elder Fraud Seminar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the Sacramento Central Seventh-day Adventist Church (6045 Camellia Ave.) to learn how to protect themselves and their loved ones from common scams.

Hosted by the City of Sacramento’s Department of Information Technology (IT) in partnership with the FBI Sacramento Citizens Academy Alumni Association, Sacramento InfraGard, and the FBI Sacramento Field Office, the free seminar will provide tips and resources to help people recognize and avoid common cyber scams.

Topics include fraudulent tech support calls, lottery schemes, and family impersonation scams — all of which disproportionately target seniors.

“These seminars have proven to be an effective way to raise awareness and equip people with the knowledge they need to stay safe online,” said Information Security Officer Paolo Tandoc, who leads the initiative. “Seniors are increasingly targeted by scammers seeking financial gain, so this is an important opportunity to help protect yourself, your family, friends and neighbors.”

According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, older adults lost $3.4 billion to online fraud in 2023, with an average loss of $34,000 per victim.

Community members are encouraged to share the event with friends, family and neighbors.

The seminar is free to attend, and participants should register in advance. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP here.
