City of Sacramento distributes 200 technology kits to expand digital access

The City of Sacramento recently distributed 200 technology kits to community-based organizations and Sacramento State students through its Digital Equity Response Program. The effort is part of the City’s ongoing work to improve digital access and opportunity for underserved residents.

At the device pickup event held Tuesday morning at City Hall, city officials, program partners, and community members gathered to highlight the impact of the program. Each kit, managed and assembled by the City’s Information Technology Department, includes a new Dell laptop, a T-Mobile MiFi hotspot and two years of prepaid internet service.

“These technology kits are opening doors for students and families who need reliable tools to succeed in school, find jobs or stay connected,” said Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes. “We are proud to support digital equity in our neighborhoods, and I commend the City’s IT Department for their leadership and dedication in making this possible.”

The Digital Equity Response Program was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to address technology and internet gaps in Sacramento communities. Continued funding in the City’s fiscal year 2024–25 budget allows the program to serve more residents.

This year’s distribution includes 150 kits going to community-based organizations that host learning labs, job support and public access programs. These organizations were nominated by residents and selected to ensure laptops stay available onsite for ongoing community use.

Recipients include Hmong Youth and Parents United, La Familia Counseling Center, Asian Resources Inc., and Stanford Settlement Neighborhood Center, among others.

The remaining 50 kits were distributed to students enrolled in technical programs in the College of Business at Sacramento State. The goal is to remove financial barriers for students preparing for careers in technology.
